A Quick Diagnosis
The hits just keep on coming with Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Tropical Malady, a Thai drama strung somewhere between awkward romance, Borgesian meta-narrative, Jungian parable, and erotic dream. Yes, it's as strange as you've heard, and yes, like most movies that are as strange as you've heard, I really liked it, though Blissfully Yours remains my pick of Apichatpong's triad so far. Very quick thoughts here, at the bottom of my 2005 New Year's Resolutions......which, surely I'll be getting around to all 36 of those unseen movies in the next two weeks? I am nothing if not goal-oriented, with a sparkling gift for follow-through.

Glad you liked this, and that you were able to like it (like me) without managing to make complete intellectual sense of it, which I hardly think it asks us to.
The next thing I'm dying to know: what's so great (or good) about Bee Season? As one of a majority of viewers who seem to have found themselves left out in the cold, I have to ask: isn't the movie just gesturing towards emotional connectivity rather than actually achieving it? I felt I was being asked to lip-read its epiphanies, somehow. Sorry to seem bullish - I'm really just trying to tease another long review out of you! (Plus I always hate being in the boring old majority.)
