For an essentially diagrammatic tale, hewing close to expectation, this is disarmingly forceful, compassionate, and tough.
Carefully balances respect for faith and tradition with protest of punitive practice. Stern storytelling, but not pitiless.
Would that all of Gitai's abundant body of work were this focused and sharp. Valuable perspectives on gender, power, religion, and culture.
