Compellingly strange downscale drama, evoking the heroine's shame of poverty and family as few movies of its era do.
Much of what hampers the film from one stanpoint, such as its ambivalent blend of candor and euphemism, sorrow and romance, also makes it memorable. Quite frank about sex work.
