The Race: Predictions By Category
If you thought last year's acting races were close, this year's represent an even more titillating collection of close, close races. The Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay races seem easier to call—but, then again, they did last year as well, and then look what happened! Bill Condon had an Oscar and the producers of Saving Private Ryan didn't! Here are my best attempts to figure out what's going to happen this Sunday, March 26th. As time permits, I will add predictions for the other categories as well.

The Nominations

COMPLETE NOMINATIONS AND REACTIONS
The complete list of nominations in all of the Oscar categories save the Documentary Short, Animated Short, and Live-Action Short Film entrants; I never have anything meaningful or incisive to say about those derbies, since the films are almost always unknown to me. (I do tip you off to where you might read up on those races.)

NOMINATION PREDICTIONS
Having correctly forecast 78% of last year's nominees in the Picture, Director, Acting, and Writing categories, I'm coming up to bat in an even more unpredictable year. Check out my predictions in the 20 major categories—sorry, no guesses about short films!—as well as the highly debatable logic behind each pick.

LIST OF ELIGIBLE FILMS
Thought Analyze This came out in 1998? Thought Play It to the Bone debuted in 2000? Thought Deuce Bigalow:
Male Gigolo
couldn't possibly be qualified for Oscar nods? Wondering why Run Lola Run got ignored?
Check out this alphabetical list of the 245 films eligible for the 1999 Academy Awards,
and see for yourself what coulda (and couldn'a) been a contendah, plus a brief word about why.
