Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
First screened in June 2015
Director: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. Cast: Thomas Mann, Olivia Cooke, RJ Cyler, Katherine C. Hughes, Molly Shannon, Connie Britton, Nick Offerman, Jon Bernthal, Bobb'e J. Thompson, Masam Holden, Matt Bennett. Screenplay: Jesse Andrews (based on his novel). Twitter Capsule:
Aka Me and Garden State and the Unexplored Black Sidekick. Banal, inert, narcissistic Epiphanies awash in buggy lenses, stylistic tics.
I concede the film may be trying something: even the distorted lenses suggest an attempt to externalize deep narcissism. But everything feels cloddish, shallow, and affected.
