Despite repetitive and self-serious passages, the delicate, mythopoeic approach to a romantic-triangle narrative engaged me.
Kawase's the only Japanese female auteur whose films leave the country (and barely). She's also seen as enjoying inordinate Cannes patronage. Lot of baggage on this modest, gossamer film.
